HIGH-LEVEL INDUSTRY INSIGHT

Go beyond 'best practice' and learn how to stand out from the crowd.

  • “I think my time at the Howard Fine Studio will be one of the most important times of my life…I'm still learning lessons retrospectively years on. I think Howard is doing remarkable things for acting - and has assembled a beautiful team to implement, what I feel, is the overlooked truth of acting.”

    Paul Ayre (Part Time Program)

  • “My journey at The Howard Fine Acting Studio in Melbourne was nothing short of amazing. Coming from a background in music & live performance, I discovered a gap in my skills for screen and theatre. The studio's teaching of the Uta Hagen technique was a revelation, resonating with me on so many levels and instilled the confidence I needed to fully express myself. The exceptional guidance from both local and L.A.-based teachers was instrumental in my growth.

Since graduating from the Part Time course in October, I've secured a lead role in a national TVC through a connection made at the studio and recently signed with an agency. The immersive experience at Howard Fine not only reignited my passion for acting but also equipped me with the tools to bring characters to life authentically. Grateful for this unique and enriching chapter that has fundamentally shaped my journey in the world of acting. If you're thinking about enrolling…..do it!”

    Zac Taylor (Part Time Program)

  • “The Howard Fine Studio enabled me to utilise the best parts of myself to become a more grounded, open, and adaptable Actor.

Since graduating from the Part-Time ensemble in 2022, I secured representation and have been working in various projects on-screen and off; including the Melbourne Fringe Festival in 2023. I’m currently in the midst of now filming my first feature, still implementing techniques i originally developed with the studio.

The HF Acting Studio allowed me the space to safely break through mental and emotional barricades.I would highly recommend studying at the Howard Fine Studio in any capacity.”

    Stelios Ioannides (Part Time Program)

  • “My experience with the Howard Fine Acting Studio has been truly life changing, and has helped me develop my craft as an actor and in turn grow as a person. Thank you to the incredible faculty and my dedicated peers for the privilege of working with you.”

    Heather Bloom (Part Time Program)

Course Breakdown

  • The Part Time program commences with several weeks of intensive technique training. During this module students are introduced to the award-winning acting principles of the Howard Fine Acting Studio. Students learn how to access authentic emotions in performance, how to analyse a script and how to rehearse effectively. This module also deals with common mistakes and the fundamentals of the craft of acting.

  • Scene Study is the actors’ gym, it is the arena where we put into practice all of the techniques we have learnt. The Part Time program features several units of Scene Study, exploring multiple characters, situations and scenarios. In this module students will deepen their understanding of the technique, and develop self-critiquing skills. Students work with a partner on assigned scenes from The Studio’s extensive play library of modern classics and esteemed works.

  • This course unit focuses upon authentic and grounded screen performance. The camera is our most intimate acting partner, to succeed on screen we need to work free of inhibition. Students are taught the fundamental on-camera techniques applicable for both the small and big screen.

  • Students work closely with their tutor on two short audition scenes prior to working with a professional casting director who provides industry-focused feedback and insight.

  • This part of the program teaches students how to create compelling auditions every single time.

With an emphasis on self-tape auditions, this unit further enhances the students script analysis, character creation and emotional access in the high-pressure environment of the audition.

  • Improvisation has taken Hollywood by storm over the last two decades, with some of the most highly respected and award-winning actors starting life as improvisers. This course unit helps actors learn how to apply improvisation to acting, and give their work an innovative and creative edge. Actors learn how improvisation can enhance scene work, rehearsal and performance, and use improvisation to create devised theatre and comedy.

  • This part of the program further refines the students understanding of technique as they tackle challenging monologues. With a particular focus on substantiating a character, finding personal connection to a character and emotional authenticity, this course unit focuses heavily on the individual.

  • The Speech and Singing for Actors program responds to the needs of actors to have a strong and powerful connection to their unique emotional sources, and uses vocal exercises to develop the actor’s ability to connect to text in performance. Students will explore the application of emotional experiences when approaching their work, through personal story telling, song and spoken word, discovering ways to safely use their entire emotional range in performance.

  • To fully serve the actors' process and to provide the best training possible, the Howard Fine Acting Studio believes strongly in ongoing voice training. As part of the Part Time course, students can anticipate rigorous and regular voice training led by Sass Pinci.

  • The Part Time course features several lectures which focus on specific elements of technique. Hosted online from Los Angeles by Howard Fine, Marilyn McIntyre and David Coury, and from Melbourne by Philip Hayden. The lectures may include: Eight Steps to Role Preparation, Your Voice & Impulse, Emotional Courage, Auditions & the Industry, Imagination and Playing Physical Conditions.
